Austin and the Central Texas area have tons and tons of natural granite which means that it is going to be a bunch cheaper than other parts of the country. Most projects that call for sand as a base are in areas where decomposed granite in less plentiful and much more expensive. Decomposed granite is a much more stable base than sand. Over time the decomposed granite packs down better and maintains its levels much better than sand. In short, we are lucky here in Austin to have such an abundant landscaping resource.
